Indoe Loop on stage at the Balls Bluff Tavern in Leesburg, VA. 5-12-01

Indoe Loop is a loosely knit, all original experimental rock-folk groove outfit based out of Northern Virginia. Fronted by singer songwriter Joe Herbert, Indoe Loop performed in and around DC, Baltimore and the state of Virginia for just over 4 years, beginning in 1996. The music of Indoe Loop is a bit heavier and decidedly more psychedelic in nature, with lots of long jams tossed into the mix. Most of the set list was comprised of Joe Herbert's songs, many of which have lost their place in the current line up. (almost, see thru you, torn, sam's girlfriend, etc. ) with a few obscure covers (okie from muskogee?~!) and some other original tunes from the contributing band members. Influences are varied, but should include Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, and obscure 70's Canadian group Edward Bear. Indoe Loop still perform sporatically at choice outdoor festivals and benefits.

Here's an interesting story about 'IndoeLoop.Com'

We used to have a very cool website for Indoe Loop. Some of the content, like my lyrics page, were taken directly from there, with the cool black background, blue letters, etc. After some time, and having gone solo, the domain name was allowed to expire. I honestly meant to buy it shortly after its expiration, but then curiously, I began to receive e-mails from my friends who wanted to know what was going on with 'indoeloop.com'. When I went over to check on it, I was surprised to find it had been purchased by some huge conglomerate based out of Hong Kong. What the hell?? Who were these people, and what could they possibly want with "Indoe Loop"?

I looked into it and learned a few things about these guys, none of which I was happy about. See, as soon as you allow a domain name to lapse, like in the event you don't have the 50 bucks on hand when the time comes to renew, these guys (I think they're called 'worlds largest search' or some stupid name like that), come swooping down like vultures and grab it up, presumably in the far off chance that you'll offer them lots of money to get it back. Or in the even more remote chance that you'll actually want to use their services instead of hotsheet, yahoo or google, like everybody else.

So I went and checked them out (using google, of course) and found that they'd been sued several times by companies as small as a restaurant in Florida, and as large as Price Waterhouse, who tried to prove that "their name.com" was exclusive to their company, and recognized as such by their customers. Well, guess what? The goons at 'world's largest search' (who try to remain nameless on the page) have so far managed to win each of these lawsuits. somehow, they proved that 'pwc.com' or 'waterfront.com' (the small restaurant in florida) were generic terms, and could not be expected to refer exclusively to those said corporations.

Now let's think about this for a sec. What possible use, generic or otherwise, could 'world's largest search' have for the term 'indoe loop'?? How could they even pretend to think that someone might just happen to trip over a name like that, (i mean, come on. Indoe Loop??), find their lame assed search page, and not wonder how they got here? What are the chances of someone actually wanting to find a search page, and think, "oh, I'll just type in 'indoeloop.com'- you know, they're known as the 'world's largest search engine!" Well, the chances of this happening are zero. There is no chance whatsoever. None. These guys simply want to divert traffic from folks who are legitimately looking for my band, and bring them to their crappy website. If i had a lot of money, I'm sure I could win a lawsuit and get the Indoe Loop name back, but who's got the time? All I ask is that you not use their service, and remember to renew your domain name before it expires. Because it's obvious that they have no real vested interest in INDOELOOP.COM. Thank you.

Here's a shot of our "Indoe Loop Reunion" show, taken last Summer at the SoundQuilt Music Festival. This show brought three of the original members of Indoe Loop back together again, for a one time performance. We have Roy Richardson's on bass, Kenny McChord on lead guitars, plus some special guest musicians as well. That's Fredo from Ubiquitone playing the keyboards, and Wayne Eubanks on drums. Herb Manila was kind enough to lend his considerable talents to our set, and a good time was had by all. - Photo by Kim Robzen

Another one from the back yard 'bamboo' publicity shots. Note the "bad ass" look on Royboy's face. Truly Menacing! - Photo by Ken McChord via tripod.

Cool angled shot of me and Kenny breakin' it down. I always loved the Gibson ES-335 model. Oh to be rich and be able to afford the finer things in life. Like a Gibson ES-335. - Photo by Kiki.

Have you ever seen a kit this size before? I mean outside a Van Halen or Rush concert? I don't think Mr. Walters used the entire monster kit too often, but it was fun to look at. Lots of cymbols. Lots of drums. Plus a far out sounding synthesized contraption we called "Spock". Pete used it to good effect on our "Indoe Loop" CD. I was always impressed at how well he fit into our 'space' segments. Not every drummer or musician is comfortable doing that sort of thing, so we're typically uneasy about introducing it to a new member. But this guy? Hell, he just jumped right in and never questioned it. - Photo by Pete Walters.

A brief history and Time Line of Indoe Loop:

we started out as a band with no name, just like every band i've ever been in. after moving to virginia from new hampshire, i began running ads for musicians. lots of interviews and auditions followed, and i must've met and tried out 50 or 60 different players. after about 11 months of this, i decided to narrow my focus and concentrate on guitar players. most of them either sucked, wanted to be the next gin blossoms, or i didn't like them cuz they acted like a dick. ok, some of these applied more than once. i got so sick of guitar players by now that i was thinking about just doing it myself. i was already writing on guitar, but didn't want to give up playing bass, since i was good at that. i decided to switch gears and run ads for a drummer. this is when a guy named chris called. the conversation went something like this:
"yeah, i saw your ad in the city paper..?"
"yeah? (all excited) you a drummer??"
"no, guitar."
"what the fuck?"

but i figured hey, i wasn't hearing back from any good drummers, might as well hear this guy out. especially when he told me he played stuff like 'mason's children' and 'weather report suite'. he drove down to the farm and the minute the guy started tuning up, i knew something was going on here. but i still needed a couple of other guys for this band to happen.

next, i saw an add from a drummer AND guitar player- package deal. hmm.. since i was still open to being either the bass player or guitar player, i decided to go and check these guys out. well, when i got to their rehearsal space up in leesburg, i was totally blown away. we spent a few hours jamming out on dead songs, with kenny (the guitarist) singing the bulk of the material. both seemed like nice guys. jeff, the drummer, had a good voice and an easy going manner. they had an entire jam room rented out of a storage facility, with small fridge stocked full of beer, lots of electrical outlets, and even had air conditioning during the summer.

eventually, i told them about this other guitar player chris, who i thought would fit into the group quite well. i brought him out there and the four of us just clicked. so it was settled -i'd play bass, there'd be two guitarists and a drummer. the classic line up. only thing was, i had a whole shit load of songs i'd written up in new hampshire, and every time i showed them one, they'd get all excited and encourage me to bring out more. i'd then switch over to guitar, show them how the song went, then scurry back to the bass to try and come up with a bass part, all the while attempting to sing the lyrics i'd written. strange way of doing things, but hey- i wanted to keep getting these songs out, and this was a way of doing it.

after a few months, chris announced that he had to split. he was opening up a bed and breakfast down in bumfuck, west virginia, and this put us on a search for another guitarist. the idea of me switching to guitar was still remote, since i never considered myself as much of a player. but i was writing these tunes on guitar, and definitely had a decent sense of rhythm. i just got intimidated when it came to all those chords.

For memorial day, we decided to have a big blow out jam at my place, where we'd be having a 'film crew' (headed by kenny's brother) come and take footage of us while we played on my front porch on the 100 acre farm we occupied in nokesville, VA. this was gonna be fun. chris was able to make this show, and it was looking more and more like a one last time 'reunion' show. lots of folks from PA came down for the weekend, and everything went great. jeff invited his friend roy, who also played bass. roy got to sit in with us after our set, and was quite impressive. plus, it allowed me to move over to guitar some more. hey, this was definitely easier.

that fall, chris and i took a ride out to the storage unit to jam out one night and, long story short, the cops were called, we were told to shut it down, and that was the end of our jam space at fort knox storage facility. kenny seemed to take it well though, said it was pretty much inevitable, since they'd been building condos right next to it and people were starting to move in. we weren't playing there much anyway, having run dry with our ads and auditions for a 2nd guitarist. it was agreed that we'd move the operation to the farm. this was the best thing that could've happened, as far as i could see.

while on vacation up in new hampshire, kenny called me with a proposition: i make the move to guitar, and we bring in roy on bass. it was a good move, and it also enabled me to begin really focusing on my writing, which was coming at a more steady pace. with the entire band set up in a huge double room on the second floor of the farm house, i suddenly had more freedom to pursue this music. plus, we'd be able to play as late and as loud as we wanted, with nobody around for acres! we never once got a single complaint for noise.

Next Time- Indoe Loop gets a name.
